Online Seminar: “The Bologna Process and the Higher Education System of Tajikistan: Trends and Perspectives”

On September 24, 2025, the National Erasmus+ Office in Tajikistan organized an online seminar titled “The Bologna Process and the Higher Education System of Tajikistan: Trends and Perspectives.” The event was held with the support of the Technical Assistance Missions (TAM), the Support to Higher Education Reform Experts (SPHERE), and the OBREAL Global Observatory of EU Relations with Other Regions of the World, within the framework of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

The event attracted over 60 participants, including representatives from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Tajikistan, universities across the country, as well as national and international higher education reform experts.

Dr. Mohbonu Nakhatzoda, Coordinator of the National Erasmus+ Office in Tajikistan, officially opened the event. In her opening remarks, she emphasized the importance of the seminar’s theme, the significance of international cooperation in higher education, and the vital role of the Erasmus+ programme in supporting ongoing reforms.

Following the opening, Ms. Banu Mukatayevna Narbekova, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University and a member of the HERE team from Kazakhstan, delivered a presentation. She shared Kazakhstan’s experience in implementing the Bologna Process while highlighting its core principles, fundamental values, stages of integration, and associated challenges.

Dr. Simon Marti, a representative of the European University Association (EUA), presented on the topic of doctoral education in the context of the Bologna Process. His presentation covered the institutionalization of PhD programmes, the status of doctoral candidates, supervision practices, and career development opportunities.

Mr. Odinzoda Ramazon Safar, a member of the HERE team of Tajikistan, presented on “Micro-credentials: The Future of Higher Education and the Labor Market.” He explained the concept of micro-credentials, their differences from traditional degrees, as well as their potential benefits and the challenges related to their implementation in the education system.

The seminar reaffirmed the continued relevance of the Bologna Process as a guiding framework for higher education reform in Tajikistan. Discussions emphasized the importance of further institutional development, the adoption of flexible learning formats, and deeper integration with the European Higher Education Area. Participants highlighted the need for sustained dialogue among universities, governmental bodies, and international partners to support innovation and modernization in the sector. The event served as a productive platform for sharing knowledge, reflecting on current progress, and identifying future directions for higher education development in Tajikistan.
