The End of Diplomas? Micro-Credentials, Skills, and Employability – International Seminar in Rabat

On 2–3 June 2025, the National Erasmus+ Office in Tajikistan took part in a high-level international seminar titled “The End of Diplomas? Micro-Credentials, Skills, and Employability,” held at the International University of Rabat (UIR), Morocco.

The event was organized within the framework of the SPHERE initiative (Support to Higher Education Reform Experts), a programme funded by the European Union to promote higher education reform in 23 partner countries. It brought together over 60 participants, including international experts, policy-makers, university leaders, student representatives, and private sector stakeholders from across Europe, the Western Balkans, Eastern Partnership countries, Central Asia, and the Southern Mediterranean region.

Tajikistan was represented by Dr. Mohbonu Nakhatzoda, Coordinator of the Erasmus+ National Office in Tajikistan, and Mr. Ramazon Odinazoda, a member of the national Higher Education Reform Experts (HERE) team. Both delegates made active contributions to the seminar discussions, focusing on:

  • Comparative analysis of micro-credentials and traditional academic diplomas
  • Legal, regulatory, and financial frameworks for the implementation of micro-credentials
  • The role of universities and employers in supporting flexible and skills-based learning pathways

Participants explored the potential of micro-credentials—short-term certifications that recognize specific skills and competencies—as a complement or alternative to traditional degree programs. Emphasis was placed on improving graduate employability, supporting lifelong learning, and aligning educational outcomes with the needs of the labor market.

The seminar provided an important opportunity for mutual learning and international dialogue, offering a platform for sharing innovative practices and policy approaches that aim to modernize higher education systems in the face of evolving global challenges.
